Former West Indies captain and veteran batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan has announced his decision to resign from his role as selector of the men’s senior and junior panels in the West Indies Cricket Board with immediate effect. The decision comes barely a few months into his term, which was to run until 2024.

There was no explanation given as to Sarwan’s resignation, with the veteran – who originally took up the role in January – citing personal reasons.

Former leg-spinner Robert Haynes will serve in the interim as senior panel selector in addition to his role in the junior panel, as CWI looks to find Sarwan’s replacement “in the shortest time possible”.

“Given the depth of his experience in the game, we are disappointed that Ramnaresh is unable to continue in the role of selector, but we fully understand and accept his reasons,”

Jimmy Adams, Cricket West Director of Cricket said in an official statement from the CWI.

“We are grateful for his contribution during the period he was involved and hope that he will be able to contribute to West Indies Cricket in some capacity in the future.”

    the statement read.

Desmond Haynes, another cricketing great, chairs the current selection panel, which also includes head coach Phil Simmons. The CWI statement is unclear on whether the same applicant will serve as both senior men’s and junior selectors, as Sarwan did during his brief term.

The senior men’s team is in the midst of a hectic season, with squads expected to be named for the two T20 World Cups (2022 and 2024), the ODI World Cup (2023), and the ongoing WTC cycle (2022-2024).

The Windies senior side is currently in the Netherlands for their first-ever One-Day International series against their European rivals. The series is part of the ongoing ICC One-Day International Super League, which will serve as the gateway for teams to qualify for the ICC 50-over World Cup, scheduled for 2023 in India.
